About Us

Owned and operated by Jason, he created this company out of the passion for the sport and lifestyle of spearfishing. Jason primarily teaches spearfishing lessons and guides clients to land their target species of fish or their first fish ever. He has spent the last 11 years improving his hunting and diving techniques in the Hawaiian waters after he was first hooked on the sport in Norway over a decade ago. Jason currently runs this business by himself but he makes every effort to teach his clients about safety, ethics, risks and of course spearfishing.

He never stops improving his products because he believes innovating will make the most functional product.  Jason had the vision to make the very best pipe guns on the market and he developed the "Wana" series spearguns. These performance based spearguns were designed, tested, and built in his own home. Wana (pronounced Vah-Na) meaning Sea Urchin was named after the animal's sharp moveable spines.  These spearguns feature the very best materials and components available on the market today.  Get in touch with us to learn how Kairos Spearfishing can help you.

FAQ

I saw this on TV, what am I getting myself into?

First of all, spearfishing is not easy! Things you need to know, Oahu has the highest population of people of all the islands with the most divers. A lot of these guys will hunt year round and the regulation we have on Oahu doesn't do enough to protect our marine resources.

That being said, these fish are smart!

There is so much to learn, but I will teach you.

Let's say you have zero experience... what you will learn is:

  • How to breathe

  •  Equalization

  • Risks and how to manage them

  • Rescues and what to look for

  • To watch and analyze the wind and surf forecast, moon phases, seasons, and tide changes.

  • How to rig, load, aim your speargun and know the range

  • Body positioning while diving and how to hold the speargun.

  • Fish Identification

  • How to kill your prey, preserve the meat, and clean your fish.

  • How to effectively dive

  • How to effectively hunt

  • Remain calm when your target species is in sight

What if I only want to shoot a fish?

Everyone wants to shoot a fish. Lets remember that spearfishing is not fishing, it is underwater hunting. There is no catch and release in spearfishing. We shoot to kill and kill to eat. Every life we take should be respected, as well as the fish populations and the fishing grounds. People's ability, experience, and comfort vary drastically so please refer to the skill level guide to help me determine the best experience for you.

This is not all about shooting a fish. The underwater hunting experience is what we love and keeps us coming back. Shooting a fish for dinner is bonus because each time you hop in the water you learn something about yourself and the ocean. My suggestion is to throw out your expectations, your ego, and immerse yourself in the underwater world we have at our doorstep.

What should I bring?

For lessons, you only need to bring a swimsuit, towel, reef safe sunscreen, water, and anything else you would normally take to the beach. It's recommended that you bring your own mask and snorkel but it is not necessary. I have all the gear you will need and I have a strict long blade fin use policy.

I'm staying in a hotel, how am I supposed to eat the fish I catch?

It depends on the fish! I will do my best to prepare your fish so you don't have to do any cleaning. From there you'll just need a cooler and ice to keep your fish cold. Some fish can be eaten raw with rice but luckily there are restaurants in Honolulu that will cook your fresh catch for a good price!

How likely am I to get a fish?

This is entirely dependent on your ability and technique as a diver. I will teach you everything you need to know on how to be successful. This is like fishing/ hunting, nothing is guaranteed. The best practices are to stay positive, adjust your technique/ behavior according to my direction, and be patient. Almost every client is successful upon completion of the Zero to Spearo courses.

What about sharks!?

Yes we have wildlife here but there is nothing to worry about. The hazards we have to monitor are the weather conditions and making sure the divers are not a hazard to themselves and others.
